Climate change scientist fights back against deniers

February 25th, 2012

Is Peter Gleick a heroic whistleblower or a climate scientist in disgrace?

Gleick, president of the California-based Pacific Institute, placed himself in the middle of controversy this week after admitting he had assumed a false identity to verify the authenticity of documents he says he received anonymously through the mail.

The documents in question reportedly came from within the Heartland Institute, a right-wing, libertarian U.S. think tank that disputes the consensus scientific view of climate change: that the planet is warming and human activity is the primary cause.

Critics say Heartland, under the guise of serious debate, has put great effort into planting doubt and sewing confusion around climate science, with the intention of delaying or halting government action aimed at reining in greenhouse-gas emissions.

The package of documents Gleick obtained backed up such criticisms. “It contained information about their funders and the Institute’s apparent efforts to muddy public understanding about climate science and policy,” he wrote this week in a Huffington Post commentary. » Read more: Climate change scientist fights back against deniers

Climate change to hurt food security

February 25th, 2012

Bangladesh must improve its financial management to obtain a significant share of funds available globally to combat climate change impacts and ensure food security, said an eminent climatologist yesterday.

“The developed countries are ready to release billions of dollars to the affected countries. It is not impossible for Bangladesh to collect $2 to 3 billion, as the country is in the forefront of the fight against the climate change impacts,” said Prof Ainun Nishat, a senior adviser to International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

“But I am afraid Bangladesh may not get hold of the funds due to its poor financial management. The country must notice the direction the world is moving towards,” he said.

Prof Nishat was speaking at a discussion on “Climate change, natural disaster, environmental management and food security” on the concluding day of a two-day international symposium styled “Science for Society” at Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council in the capital. » Read more: Climate change to hurt food security

On climate change, Santorum doesn’t know what he’s talking about

February 25th, 2012

As a scientist, I am outraged at Rick Santorum’s statement denying the validity of the dangers posed to the planet from climate change and global warming. What credentials does he have to make any statement about this highly complex scientific subject?

His position is completely contrary to the one supported by the great majority of U.S. scientists, the National Academy of Sciences and NASA. Perhaps he will soon advise us on the intricacies of brain surgery or rocket science, about which he is equally knowledgeable.

GOP continues to drift

Presidential nomination debates are supposed to separate the sheep from the goats and finally identify the party’s best candidate to run in the general election in the fall. But after 20 or more such talkathons this season, the Republican Partyremains pretty much leaderless. » Read more: On climate change, Santorum doesn’t know what he’s talking about
